Tarpon Fishing

Known as the Silver King, tarpon are one of the most exciting game fish in the world. Their acrobatic leaps and powerful runs make them a bucket-list catch for anglers everywhere.

About Tarpon Fishing

Tarpon (Megalops atlanticus) are among the most sought-after game fish in saltwater fishing. They can grow over 200 pounds and are famous for their spectacular aerial displays when hooked. Found primarily in the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico, the Florida Keys, and the Caribbean, tarpon migrate along the coast in large schools during spring and summer.

Tarpon fishing is almost exclusively catch-and-release due to the species' conservation status and the tough, bony flesh that makes them poor table fare. What makes tarpon fishing special is the challenge: these fish have hard, bony mouths that are difficult to hook, and once hooked, they fight with explosive jumps that can throw the hook at any moment. A typical fight with a large tarpon can last 30 minutes to over an hour.

The Florida Keys, particularly Islamorada and Key West, are considered the tarpon capital of the world. During the spring migration (April through July), thousands of tarpon move through the channels and bridges of the Keys, creating some of the best sight-fishing opportunities anywhere. Boca Grande Pass on Florida's Gulf Coast is another legendary tarpon destination where fish stack up during their annual migration.
