Sailfish Fishing
The fastest fish in the ocean, sailfish are the pinnacle of sport fishing. Their enormous dorsal fin and blistering runs make every hookup unforgettable.
About Sailfish Fishing
Sailfish (Istiophorus platypterus) are widely considered the most beautiful and acrobatic billfish species. Their enormous, iridescent blue dorsal fin (the 'sail'), long bill, and sleek body make them one of the most recognizable fish in the ocean. Sailfish are the fastest fish in the sea, capable of bursts exceeding 68 mph, and their aerial displays when hooked are breathtaking.
Southeast Florida, from Miami to Stuart, is the sailfish capital of the world. The Gulf Stream runs close to shore here, bringing warm, nutrient-rich water within a few miles of the coast. During the winter sailfish season (November through April), it is common to raise multiple sailfish per day. Kite fishing -- suspending live baits from a kite above the surface -- is the signature technique in South Florida and produces some of the most visual fishing action anywhere.
Sailfish are almost exclusively released after capture. The fight typically involves multiple jumps, greyhounding runs across the surface, and acrobatic spins. Despite their size (averaging 40 to 70 pounds), sailfish can be effectively targeted on 20-pound spinning tackle, making for an incredibly sporty fight. Many charter captains in South Florida specialize in sailfish and run dedicated sailfish trips during the winter season.
