About Yellowfin Tuna Fishing
Yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares) are one of the most powerful game fish in the ocean. Named for their bright yellow finlets and elongated second dorsal and anal fins, yellowfin are built for speed and endurance. They can exceed 400 pounds and are found in tropical and subtropical waters worldwide. In the U.S., prime yellowfin grounds include the Gulf of Mexico, the mid-Atlantic canyons, and the waters off Southern California and Hawaii.
Yellowfin tuna are warm-blooded fish (a rare trait among fish species) that use specialized blood vessels to maintain body temperatures above the surrounding water. This gives them a metabolic advantage that fuels their incredible speed and stamina. A large yellowfin can strip hundreds of yards of line on its initial run, and fights with big fish regularly last 30 minutes to several hours on heavy tackle.
The Gulf of Mexico is one of the top yellowfin destinations in the world. Oil and gas platforms create artificial reef ecosystems that concentrate baitfish, which in turn attract tuna. Anglers target yellowfin by chunking (tossing cut bait to create a chum slick), live baiting, jigging, and high-speed trolling with skirted lures. Yellowfin are among the finest eating fish in the ocean, and fresh yellowfin sashimi caught that morning is a fishing trip experience like no other.
