King Mackerel Fishing
Kingfish are speed demons of the nearshore reef. Known for scorching runs and razor-sharp teeth, they provide fast-paced action on light tackle.
About King Mackerel Fishing
King mackerel (Scomberomorus cavalla) are one of the most exciting nearshore game fish in the southeastern United States and Gulf of Mexico. Called 'kingfish' or simply 'kings,' they are built for speed with a streamlined, torpedo-shaped body and a mouth full of sharp teeth. Kings are found over reefs, wrecks, and along current edges from the Carolinas through the Gulf of Mexico.
Kingfish are aggressive feeders that prey on small fish, especially threadfin herring, sardines, and cigar minnows. They often attack from below at high speed, frequently cutting their prey in half on the first strike. This feeding behavior is why king mackerel fishing often involves wire or heavy fluorocarbon leaders and stinger hooks -- a single-hook rig will miss more fish than it catches due to the way kings bite.
Slow-trolling live baits (threadfin herring, blue runners, or goggle eyes) is the most popular technique for targeting kings. During fall migration, large 'smoker' kings (30+ pounds) move along the coast and stack up around nearshore structure. King mackerel tournaments are wildly popular across the Southeast and Gulf Coast, with many events offering six-figure prize pools. While their reputation as table fare is mixed, fresh king mackerel steaks grilled or smoked are excellent.
