Swordfish Fishing
The gladiator of the deep. Swordfish are powerful, mysterious, and one of the most challenging fish to target, requiring specialized deep-drop techniques.
About Swordfish Fishing
Swordfish (Xiphias gladius) are among the most impressive predators in the ocean. With their signature flat, sword-like bill and massive, dark eyes adapted for hunting in the deep ocean, swordfish are built for a life at extreme depths. They can exceed 1,000 pounds and are found in all of the world's oceans, from the surface to depths exceeding 2,000 feet.
Modern swordfish fishing has been revolutionized by the daytime deep-drop technique. Traditionally, swordfish were targeted at night when they rise to shallower depths to feed. However, anglers in South Florida discovered that swordfish could be caught during the day by dropping baits to depths of 1,500 to 2,000 feet using electric reels and heavy weights. This technique has opened up swordfish fishing to charter boats that previously could not dedicate entire nights to the pursuit.
South Florida, particularly Miami and the Florida Keys, is the swordfish capital of the United States. The deep waters of the Florida Straits, where the Gulf Stream flows between Florida and the Bahamas, provide ideal habitat. Catching a swordfish from depth is a physically demanding endeavor -- the combination of heavy tackle, deep water, and the incredible power of the fish makes for marathon battles. Swordfish are excellent eating, with firm, steak-like flesh that holds up well on the grill.
