Earlier in 2026, Florida's Gulf season ran daily from May 22 to July 31, then daily Sept 1 – Oct 4 and Oct 9 – 22, with weekend days after that (FWC).

Can you go red snapper fishing on a charter on these dates?

It depends on the boat's permits, not just the date. FWC's fall and winter days are the private recreational season. They also apply to “charter for-hire vessels that do not have a federal permit,” which FWC limits to harvest “in Florida Gulf state waters only.” Boats that do hold the federal Gulf charter/headboat reef fish permit are closed for red snapper everywhere until their own federal season reopens.

Why federally permitted charters are closed

Boats with the federal permit get their own red snapper season from NOAA. In 2026 it ran 147 days, from June 1 to 12:01 a.m. Oct 26. NOAA's rule once it closes: “Persons aboard a federally-permitted for-hire reef fish vessel cannot fish for or possess red snapper in federal or state waters when the federal for-hire season is closed.” It applies “even if the vessel is not acting as a charter vessel.” The trade-off is that those boats had a long summer season. The 2026 closure runs to Jan 1, 2027, and federal rules then close the for-hire season from Jan 1 through May 31 each year, so federally permitted boats can't use the Jan 1–4 days either.

Why non-federal charters stay inside 9 miles

Florida manages the private angling season, but NOAA says that delegation “does not allow for-hire vessels to fish for or possess red snapper in or from federal waters without a federal for-hire permit.” FWC defines Gulf state waters as “from shore to 9 miles.”

Can NOAA reopen the federal charter season?

Yes. If federal for-hire landings came in under the 2026 catch target, NOAA can reopen the season based on updated projections (FB26-014). As of October 27, 2026, no reopening had been announced. If one is, this page and the table above change.

What this means in practice

A red snapper charter on these dates is a nearshore reef trip inside 9 miles, usually on a smaller state-licensed boat. Whether red snapper are realistically within reach inside 9 miles depends on the port and the conditions, so ask the captain before you book. Nobody can promise a catch.

Limits and rules for Gulf red snapper on a charter

  • Minimum size: 16 inches total length (FWC).
  • Bag limit: 2 per person, within Florida's 10-snapper aggregate. Charter captain and crew: zero (FWC).
  • Gear in Gulf state waters: non-stainless steel, non-offset circle hooks with natural bait, and a descending device or venting tool rigged and ready (FWC reef fish gear rules). FWC points anglers to Return ’Em Right for release-gear training.
  • Fishing license: customers on a for-hire vessel with a valid charter license are covered (FWC). More in our fishing license guide.
  • State Reef Fish Survey: not needed on a licensed charter. The State Reef Fish Angler designation is for anglers fishing from private boats (FWC).

How to tell if a charter can take you red snapper fishing

Copy these questions into a message to any Gulf captain before you book:

  1. 1Does your boat hold a federal Gulf charter/headboat reef fish permit? (If yes, no red snapper for the rest of this season.)
  2. 2Is my date one of FWC's open days?
  3. 3Will we fish Gulf state waters (inside 9 miles), and are red snapper realistically there from your port this time of year?
  4. 4What else do you target if the red snapper bite is slow or the seas are rough?
  5. 5Is the Florida fishing license covered on your boat?
  6. 6What happens to my booking if a cold front cancels the trip?

Federal permits are public: NOAA's public permit lookup shows them by vessel. Asking the captain is still the easiest route.

Or start from the Florida charters hub.

No red snapper on your dates? Other Gulf trips worth booking

Most Gulf charters run year-round. Inshore trips target redfish, trout, snook and sheepshead, and nearshore trips go after kingfish and other reef fish such as grouper and amberjack. Each species has its own season, size and bag limits, and some (gag grouper and greater amberjack among them) close for part of the year, so check FWC's saltwater regulations for your dates and ask the captain what's open. You can also pack with our what to bring list and compare charter costs. For the species itself, see our red snapper guide.

Red snapper season FAQ

When is red snapper season in Florida's Gulf for the rest of 2026?

On weekends and holidays through Jan 4, 2027: Oct 30–Nov 1, Nov 7–8, 14–15, 21–22, Thanksgiving Nov 26–29, Dec 5–6, 12–13, 19–20, Christmas Dec 25–27 and Jan 1–4, 2027. Every other day is closed. These are FWC's dates for Florida Gulf state and federal waters, and FWC can change them, so check before you go.

Is red snapper open on Thanksgiving weekend in Florida?

Yes. Florida's Gulf red snapper season is open Thursday Nov 26 through Sunday Nov 29, 2026, according to FWC. On a charter, that only helps if the boat does not hold a federal Gulf reef fish charter/headboat permit and you fish Gulf state waters, inside 9 miles.

Can I go red snapper fishing on a charter in November or December?

Only on a state-licensed charter that does not hold a federal Gulf reef fish charter/headboat permit, fishing Gulf state waters (shore to 9 miles), on one of FWC's open days. Federally permitted charters and headboats closed for red snapper at 12:01 a.m. Oct 26, 2026, in state and federal waters.

Why can't my charter captain keep red snapper right now?

If the boat holds a federal Gulf charter/headboat reef fish permit, NOAA's for-hire red snapper season closed at 12:01 a.m. Oct 26, 2026, and that closure applies in state waters too, even on a family trip. Federal rules also keep the for-hire season closed from Jan 1 through May 31, so it covers Jan 1–4, 2027 as well, unless NOAA reopens.

How far out are Florida's Gulf state waters?

From shore to 9 miles, in FWC's words. A charter without a federal reef fish permit can keep red snapper only inside that line, on FWC's open days. Beyond it are federal waters, where for-hire boats cannot fish for or keep red snapper without a federal for-hire permit.

What's the red snapper size and bag limit in Florida's Gulf?

The minimum size is 16 inches total length and the bag limit is 2 per person, inside Florida's 10-snapper aggregate. On a charter, the captain and crew can keep zero. Reef fish gear rules apply: circle hooks with natural bait and a descending device or venting tool rigged and ready.

Do I need a fishing license or the State Reef Fish Survey on a charter?

No to both if the boat has a valid Florida charter license. FWC exempts anglers fishing from a licensed for-hire vessel from the saltwater license, and from the State Reef Fish Angler designation, which is for anglers fishing from private boats. Ask your captain to confirm the boat's charter license.

Is Atlantic red snapper still open in Florida?

No. Florida's 2026 Atlantic red snapper season ended Oct 22, and FWC lists it as closed in state and federal waters. The dates on this page are for the Gulf of America (Gulf of Mexico) side only.
